Participants will make pinhole cameras and photographs together, work with zone plates, discuss pinhole techniques, look at slides and photographs of pinhole images from the exten-sive Pinhole Resource collection (approx-imately 3,000 photographs). The workshop is open to beginning to advanced photographers. The Pinhole Resource will provide standard darkroom chemicals, participants will provide their own film and paper. NON-SILVER WORKSHOP August 18-22, 1997 Sarah Van Keuren Tuition: $625.00 Sarah Van Keuren will teach a workshop in cyanotype and gum bichromate*. Van Keuren has been teaching non-silver processes at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia since 1980, has given many workshops and is the author of A Non-Silver Manual. Her own work uses 8"x10" pinhole negatives and is a combination of cyanotype and gum bichromate. Members of the workshop who have large format nega-tives of any sort may contact print them in colors brushed by hand onto a variety of papers. Those who do not have such negatives may use anything they can devise to block varying amounts of light from striking the light-sensitive chemistry. Experimentation and a sense of play are encouraged. The Pinhole Resource will provide the non-silver supplies and some amount of paper needed for this workshop. *Cyanotype is a two-part iron salt solution that produces a rich blue image when applied to an organic surface and exposed to strong actinic light such as the sun. Development is in plain water. Gum bichromate is an emulsion that consists of watercolor pigment and gum arabic mixed with light-sensitive chromium salt. Gum prints like cyanotype are exposed to sun and developed in water. Gum bichromate may be printed on top of cyanotype and multiple layers of gum may be printed to achieve an in-color effect.
