Top Ten Things for Kids in
New Orleans
Streetcar Rides

Passengers boarding the St.
Charles Line
Streetcars are a blast for kids.
It's a train ride that's real, not just some
miniature replica in a park. What's great about
the two streetcar lines in New Orleans is that
they're working transit lines, not merely tourist
attractions.
There are two streetcar lines in
New Orleans: the St. Charles Avenue line, and the
Riverfront line. The St. Charles line has been
running for over a hundred years in one form or
another. The Perly-Thomas cars in use on St.
Charles all date from the 1920s. Take the St.
Charles line from downtown (Carondelet and Canal
Streets) to go uptown to shop, eat, or go to the
Zoo. Or you can just ride the streetcar to the
end of the line at Claiborne and Carrollton, then
ride back to the beginning. The whole trip takes
about 2.5 hours.
The Riverfront line runs from
Julia St. in the Warehouse District to Esplanade
Avenue in the Quarter. Our favorite thing to do
as a family on the Riverfront line is to drive
into town, park at the Riverwalk mall's lot (next
to the Convention Center) and ride the streetcar
down to the Quarter. The parking at the Riverwalk
is only like $5 for the day, so the cost of the
parking plus carfare ($1.25 per person) isn't
much more than driving into the Quarter and
parking there. If the kids are up to it, we'll
walk back, passing through the Riverwalk mall to
do so. Riverwalk has a Disney store, an WB Store,
and a Great Train store, so it's a great draw for
children.
