Top Ten Things for Kids in
New Orleans
Riverboat Cruises

The Creole Queen, rollin'
along the river.
Riverboat cruises are fun for adults and kids
alike. The standard cruise starts somewhere
around Canal St. and the River (the Natchez docks
over in the Quarter, the Creole Queen by the
Hilton Hotel and the Riverwalk) and cruises the
harbor from Chalmette to Uptown. Several of the
boats now dock at the Chalmette Battlefield
National Historic Park (site of the Battle of New
Orleans), allowing you to get out and explore the
battlefield. This is a great option with
children, since the boat is actually "going
someplace" rather than just cruising.
In addition to the harbor-style cruise, there
are several boats that go back into the bayous
off of the river. These tend to be all-day
affairs, but are quite interesting, and good for
older children. Younger kids may tend to feel
cooped-up on the boat all day, and the summer
heat makes these cruises a bit difficult if
they're not a bit independent.
The third cruise that's great for kids is a
Zoo Cruise. The MV John James Audubon docks right
at the Aquarium of the Americas and regularly
heads up the river to the Audubon Zoological
Gardens. The boat docs, you see the Zoo, then you
can either return via the river or take the
streetcar back downtown. In this way, you can
actually do three of the things on this list in
one morning or afternoon--take a river cruise,
visit the zoo, and ride a streetcar.
