Top Ten Things for Kids in
New Orleans
City Park

One of the nation's largest urban
parks, City Park has a lot to offer family
travelers looking for a break from being
tourists. There are four golf courses, a softball
complex with batting cages, the Botanical
Gardens, the New Orleans Museum of Art, and acres
of open area for picnics and just plain walking
around. There's also Storyland for smaller
children. At first glance, Storyland looks like a
miniature golf course, with its displays that act
out various nursery rhymes. The kids get to
explore the "sets" for some classic
children's stories, play on a fire engine,
explore a rocket ship, and let their imaginations
run for a bit. Behind Storyland is the Carousel,
a full-sized merry-go-round. Next to the Carousel
are several other carnival-style rides (small
roller coaster, a Ferris wheel, bumper cars,
Tilt-a-Whirl, etc.) and the station for the
miniature railroad. The City Park Railroad is a
mile-and-a-half line where you ride around the
park on a train pulled by a quarter-scale
locomotive. At Christmastime, the park is the
home of "Celebration in the Oaks,"
where the centuries-old trees are decorated with
hundreds of lights for the holidays.
