Unlike the larger monuments in the cemeteries at the head of Canal St., memorials to war dead in the early days of the city were much smaller affairs. This is because of the limited space available in the St. Louis cemeteries.
The Orleans Battalion fought at the Battle of New Orleans on January 8, 1815. Many of the men who manned the cannons on the rampart and faced the British that day were laid to rest in this mausoleum. The corners of the mausoleum, as well as the iron fence surrounding it all have an "exploding bomb" motif, indicating that these men served in the artillery branch.
