Jazz Fest '96 Photos
These photos were shot by Richard Vallon, Jr., and Ray Broussard for VNO on the first day of the Fest, Friday, April 26th. Richard shot a bunch more on film that have to be processed, scanned, and "Photo-Shop'ed" (whereas these were shot with the digital camera). Look for more photos throughout the week.
This is the entrance archway to the Congo Square stage and craft exhibition. Historically, Congo Square was the part of town that is now Armstrong Park in the Treme District. Congo Square got its name because slaves and free persons of color would gather in this area in the first half of the 19th century to socialize and hold voodoo rituals. Congo Square was the site of the first Fest, in 1970, and this stage honors the heritage of the area. In keeping with the Haitian theme of the International Pavillion, the entrance archway has a decidedly Haitian look to it
Congo Square Stage
This is the stage inside Congo Square. It's typical of most of the outdoor venues at the Fair Grounds.
Phish-Heads. That tall pole you see in the background is known as a Fest "totem." Some folks carry them around to let the rest of the people in their group know where to meet or where you're heading next. Word was the secret police at the gate weren't letting these in; guess this guy's a smuggler.
