Prior to the construction of the Aquarium, there was a lot of debate over whether such a project belonged on the riverfront. Preservationists feared what the Aquarium would do to the integrity of the French Quarter, others worried about traffic along Decatur Street. One thing most folks agreed upon, however, was that just about anything would improve the looks of the old Bienville St. Wharf. The Aquarium of the Americas and the grassy Woldenberg Park area next door have made a wonderful addition to both the riverfront and the Quarter.
This is a Susie Q. Leavines photo of the main entrance to the Aquarium at night. What used to be a part of town frequented only by rats of both the 2- and 4-legged kind is now a beatiful area where locals and visitors alike can walk around and enjoy the sights and sounds of the river. The Aquarium, with its four main attractions (The Caribbean, the Mississippi, the Amazon and the Gulf of Mexico), as well as the massive IMAX theatre next door, are great family attractions. In fact, the Aquarium is now number one on our top ten things to do with kids list. One of the main things the Aquarium has going for it is air conditioning. There's precious few really interesting things that you can do on a hot July or August afternoon, but the Aquarium is one of them, and it's a blast. Check it out next time you're downtown.
