What's This Picture? This is the original Bud's Broiler restaurant, located on City Park Avenue, just up the street from Delgado Junior College. Bud's is a New
Orleans institution, with locations all over the area from Kenner to the West Bank. Their burgers are #2 on my Top Ten Burger List. This particular
location is not my all-time favorite Bud's, but it's now my favorite of the ones that are still standing. My favorite Bud's used to be the one on Pelopidas St. in Gentilly, right behind the Hebrew Rest Cemetery (near
Elysian Fields and Gentilly). This was just a few blocks away from my high school, Brother Martin. I had been going to that Bud's since I was a baby. My grandma lived on Lavender St., just off of Franklin Ave., and my
daddy worked at UNO. We'd go as a family for burgers at the Gentilly Bud's after visiting grandma. When I was in high school, we spent a lot of time at Bud's, as well as Francois' Oyster Reef on Elysian Fields, which
then turned into a place called the Patty Wagon. (The location is now a hardware store.) The City Park Avenue Bud's is also special because it's where we would have our Prep Quiz Bowl victory celebrations back in high
school. It was also on the way back to Metairie (which is where I slept. Notice that I didn't live in Metairie, I just slept there) from UNO. My brothers from Lambda Chi and I often grabbed a burger at this Bud's. I
usually stop for a burger at Bud's on City Park when I'm out haunting the cemeteries, doing research. |
